According to wang jianguo, project manager of China railway 11th construction bureau, guangzhou metro line 18 is constructed with shield tunneling method, and the geological conditions of the project are very complicated. The shield section needs to run through the pearl river system six times. The pipeline within the crossing range is complex, the number of houses is large, and it is located in the secondary water source protection zone. The construction risk is high, and the tunneling control requirements are very strict.

Meanwhile, guangzhou metro line 18 is the fastest subway line under construction in China, with a total length of about 61 kilometers and a designed top speed of 160 kilometers per hour. There are many line transfer stations, 8 of the 9 stations in the whole line are transfer stations. The distance between stations is large, with the distance between the two longest stations reaching 25.9 kilometers, which is the subway line with the largest distance between stations in China. After the completion of the project, it only takes about 30 minutes from guangzhou nansha to guangzhou east railway station.

Wang jianguo said that the south China region, known as the "geological museum", has high requirements for shield construction technology. In order to overcome these difficulties, the project department adopted scientific and technological innovation means, established an innovation studio and information center, and conducted overall management of the project with BIM three-dimensional construction technology. Meanwhile, it explored and promoted standardized shield construction methods, which greatly improved the construction efficiency and safety quality.
